How Does the CAA Approve Solar AGL?

How Does the CAA Approve Solar AGL?

At present, there is no dedicated regulatory framework developed specifically for solar airfield ground lighting. This raises an important question: how do Civil Aviation Authorities assess whether a solar AGL system meets operational and safety requirements?

There are precedents. Tefé Airport in Brazil implemented a permanent solar runway lighting system in coordination with ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil) to ensure full compliance with applicable regulations.

Following a successful pilot program observed by ANAC, a one-year trial was approved to conduct further inspections.

The system is currently being assessed as ICAO-compliant lighting with documented risk controls. Solar Airfield Lighting Association shares these examples to support the replication of safe approval processes.
